In further support of its mission to promote literacy, the NJ Center for the Book hosted a reception at the NJ State Library in Trenton to showcase the exhibit, “Creative Writing and Artwork from New Jersey’s Youth Detention Centers.”  The exhibit highlighted the important work of young people in the state’s 17 youth detention programs as they used writing and art to explore and understand their feelings and experiences. The program featured Valerie Egar, Special Council to the Executive Director of the Juvenile Justice Commission, and Assemblywoman Mary T. Previte of the Legislative District 6.

The poetry, prose and artwork of the students was first displayed at the National Book Festival in Washington, D.C. in October, 2004 where it received great interest and praise and following the Trenton reception, the exhibit traveled to other NJ libraries for further viewing.
