Dear Mr. Zullo and Ms. Bovsun,

I can’t stop reading.  I can’t put it down.  I want to know more.  Now! I want to stop.  I can’t read anymore.  It is too depressing, horrifying.  No, keep reading.  Adolph Hitler, having so much hatred towards the Jews, I want to know more!

It is too sad!  I can’t read any longer.  How could hatred bring starvation, and death to so many innocent Jews!  I am a Jew.  Did I ever cause anyone so much hatred? I can’t stand how one person can take over, and destroy the hearts of a religion.

I want to go on, but all of the deaths tried to stop me.  I can’t even stand reading about starving people, who would eat a piece of grass, just to survive.  My mind viewed this picture, and it wouldn’t get out of my head.  It was horrifying to have sitting there.  Please stop the horror, the pain it brings is indescribable!

Read, don’t read, read,  don’t read.  In the end, I read.  How can I stand it, I don’t know, but it changed me.  I feel so lucky.  I’m a free Jew.  Everyone is equal, so why did the Germans take over the Jews of all people?  What if it were towards them?  What if we caused Adolf Hitler and the Nazis to starve, die, or suffer?  I’m left thinking, imagining, wondering!

A planned twenty-minute reading turned to forty, before bed.  I was left in my sleep to make a movie of the horror.  I have felt the hatred. I have felt the depression.  I have felt the frustration, but I survived like the brave survivors of the story.  Now, I am left to be strong, brave, and to believe anything can happen!

While reading Survivors, True Stories of Children in the Holocaust, I realized how people used to suffer. I can be thankful for all I have.  I can believe that dreams come true, only if you believe!

Yours truly,

Leigh Deitz, 6th Grade
