The NJ Center for the Book has planned a day of celebration with a focus on literacy, book arts, and poetry in partnership with the Newark Public Library. It has been five years since the Newark Public Library was designated as a literary landmark, and it is because of this that Newark Public Library is selected for this year's New Jersey Center for the Book literary spectacular conference site. Some of the topics included are teaching literacies, the art of storytelling for youth at risk, showcasing how to present Shakespeare in the classroom, instruction in genealogical searching for young people, and, finally, partnering with New Jersey's Public Broadcasting Station in teacher resource training. Mark your calendar and bookmark this page for updated information about this wonderful opportunity. Great News! We will add Jon Scieszka to the afternoon program. On Wednesday, October 22, 2008, the New Jersey Center for the Book will present Showcasing Information Literacies: New Dimensions 2008, at the Newark Public Library. Jon Scieszka, recently appointed by the Librarian of Congress as the Inaugural National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, will be speaking at 2:45. Following his keynote address, you are invited to stay for a gala closing reception. The planning committee worked hard to put together a spectacular program. Three sessions are planned offering a total of 18 workshops. Attendees will be able to choose one workshop from each session and will receive 5 professional development credits for the full day. The agenda is geared to teachers, parents, librarians, media specialists, principals, and school superintendents, covering K-12. The Second Miss Rumphius Award will be presented. Click here to view the Miss Rumphius Award Page. As we did last year, door prizes will be presented and will include a laptop and a Kindle. Parking, a continental breakfast and a hot and cold luncheon buffet will be provided as part of the registration fee. Click here to view the program for the event.
