New Jersey Center for the Book celebrated distinguished librarianship in the state of New Jersey at a reception in partnership with the SCILS Omicron Chapter of Beta Phi Mu at 3:00 p.m. Featured speaker at 4:00 was Dr. Ross Todd, Professor at SCILS and co-director of CISSL.

Celebration of New Jersey Authors Reception

Featured Speaker: Jim Murphy

This was a dedication of a literary landmark, the Joyce Kilmer Tree, at Rutgers University and the awarding of the Rutgers Medal for Children's Literature to Jim Murphy, previously given to Floyd Cooper in 2001 at the Inauguration of the N.J. Center for the Book.  Activities included a Book Arts Panel Discussion.  Notable New Jersey Books in 2006 were announced and posters were available for distribution statewide.

A light lunch was provided.

Letters about Literature Contest Awards Ceremony (2005-2006)

The New Jersey Center for the Book was invited by Governor Jon Corzine to celebrate the 2006 talented youth from around the State at the inaugural event of opening Drumthwacket for special events. Seventy-five winners, honorable mentions, and semifinalists from of the New Jersey Letters about Literature in Grades 4-12 were recognized.  Speakers included New Jersey’s Secretary of State Nina Wells, Commissioner of Education Lucille Davy and Rutgers SCILS Dean Dr. Gus Friedrich.  Eileen Cameron and Doris Ettlinger, author and illustrator of NJ’s 2005 National Book Festival’s Featured Book, G is for Garden State, also spoke.  The Literary Lion Award was presented to Eleanor Horne of the Educational Testing Service.  The three winners representing the three levels of the contest read their winning letters to the authors.  Chair Renee Swartzcoordinated the activities and Frank Miller, of ETS and member of the Board, was the master of ceremonies.  The winning essays can be viewed at the Letters about Literature Winners page.
