Letters about Literature 2006 Results
The New Jersey Center for the Book proudly announces the winners, the honorable mentions, and the semi-finalists of the 2006 Library of Congress Letters About Literature contest. About 7000 entries were received from New Jersey , an indication of how deeply New Jersey 's teachers and school librarians feel about literacy. The email addresses used for this announcement were garnered from entries and from the Library of Congress, so it is possible that duplicate emails will be received. Only about 1% of the 7000 entries became semifinalists. The judges were quite impressed with the quality of the entries. As one of the judges, Newark Public Library Director Wilma Grey, said, "As I was reading those letters, I was so uplifted by the quality of the writing and the mature thoughts of those young people. What a wonderful job they did." Letters have been sent to the winners, the honorable mentions, and the semi-finalists announcing their great success and requesting a written answer containing an email address where they can be contacted and written permission to use their names. It will be through their email that they will be invited to the statewide ceremony. If you see the name of one of your students, please congratulate them and ask them if they received a letter, and if they did, to please have Mom or Dad answer it. Only one letter will go out; although if we don't receive an answer, we have been known to go to great lengths to seek out that student. Once their written responses are received, they will be acknowledged with an email.
Congratulations to all the students and their teachers and school librarians.
